VERIFYING SIZE WHEN DEVIATING FROM STANDARD TECHNOLOGY
TECTIP No. 005

SUBJECT:    Verifying cavity size when deviating from standard technology
APPROVAL:    Ken Baeszler
PREPARED BY:    Doug Nelson
SYSTEM TYPE:    wirecut EDM Systems

OBSERVATIONS:
At times, it may be necessary to verify technology for verifying exact sizes on die
openings prior to actually cutting the die. This condition may exist if the material being
cut deviates from the material used by the machine manufacturer to create the standard technology.
Therefore it is important to establish a procedure for verifying size.

ACTIONS:

  • Keep a hole program on the machine tool that can be associated with the technology desired to cut your applications.
  • If there is enough clearance between the start hole and the die edge, use the Wire EDM start hole to run the hole program with the desired technology.
  • For example: If your start hole diameter is 2mm (.079”), use a hole program for a 2.54 (.100”) hole geometry. Once the geometry has been cut, use a set of precision pins incremented in tenths to check the hole size. Make an offset adjustment accordingly.
